Final Stats
Siena split a MAAC baseball doubleheader with archrival Marist Saturday at Siena Field, winning the first game 10-6 and losing the second 8-3. Freshman phenom Dan Paolini had five hits on the day for the Saints, raising his team-leading batting average to .381.
Siena took a seesaw opener by breaking a 6-6 tie with two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Reliever Dan Lazzaroni pitched 3.1 innings of one-hit relief without allowing a run to pick up the win for Siena.
Anthony Giansanti had two hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Paolini finished the opener with three hits and two RBI and Gary DerHagopian joined Nick Messinger with two hits for the victors.
Marist used four pitchers and all four gave up at least one run.
The Red Foxes struck first with two runs in the top of the second, but Siena answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. The teams exchanged two run rallies in the fourth and the game was tied after Marist scored two in the sixth and Siena answered with a solo run.
The Saints scored the eventual winning run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh inning. Marist committed five errors in the frame allowing Siena to score twice. Giansanti's two-RBI double down the left field line in the eighth provided the necessary insurance.
Marist never trailed in the second game. Leadoff man Richard Curylo launched a Kyle Sumple fastball over the left field wall on the first pitch of the game to put the Red Foxes up 1-0. Giansanti scored a run in the bottom of the first on a throwing error after he stole third, but Marist responded with two runs in the second and led the rest of the way.
Curylo paced the Red Foxes' 12-hit attack in the nightcap with three hits and all nine Marist starters hit safely. Paolini was the only Saint to post a multi-hit game with two knocks. Marist starter Kyle Putnam went the distance to pick up his second win of the season, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
The two teams will complete their three-game set with a rubber game Sunday at noon here in Loudonville.
