Jenna Baker scored the only run of the game on Melissa Markle's suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 walk-off victory in game one of Sunday afternoon's MAAC doubleheader at Niagara Field. In game two, Niagara rallied to come back from a three run deficit in the bottom of the sixth and held on to defeat the Saints 5-3.
In the opener, Baker reached on an infield single in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to third on an error with just one out before Markle drove her in to give the Purple Eagles a dramatic victory.
Niagara (22-12, 6-6) pitchers Michelle Krier and Patricia Kennery combined on a four hit shutout, allowing just one walk and striking out seven.
Siena (11-26, 6-8) got another solid pitching performance from freshman Amanda Filippazzo, who allowed four hits while striking out a career high eight and allowed just one unearned run in 6.2 innings.
In the nightcap, the Saints got out to an early lead on Olivia Calcagnini's two-RBI single in the fourth. Siena added another run in the sixth on Jessica Mushel's RBI single to take a 3-0 lead.
Niagara rallied back in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, highlighted by Baker's three-RBI bases clearing double. Kennery threw the final 1.2 innings to shut down Siena and pick up her second victory of the day.
Senior Jamie Piela took the loss for the Saints, allowing four runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings. Calcagnini and Stacie Sueda each went 2-for-3 at the plate and Piela went 3-for-4 and finished the day 5-for-7.
Kayla Hines finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Purple Eagles.
The Saints return to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they host cross-town rival UAlbany in a non-conference doubleheader that will support Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society.
