The Siena softball team honored 10 year old Sammie Sangelli with a ceremonial first pitch prior to Tuesday afternoon's Coaches vs. Cancer doubleheader vs. UAlbany at Siena Field. Marissa Powell had two strong outings and Meagan Butsch hit two home runs to help lead the Great Danes to the doubleheader sweep by scores of 5-0 and 11-2 (six innings).
In the opener, Powell shut down the Siena (11-28) offense with a two hit shutout in which she fanned seven Saints batters to pick up her fourth shutout of the season, her second against Siena.
UAlbany (33-12) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth behind an RBI single from Kat Smith and would go on to add another run on Michelle Connors' sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. The Great Danes would go on to add two more in the fifth and extended their lead to 5-0 on Meagan Butsch's solo home run in the sixth.
Powell took a perfect game into the fifth before senior Jamie Piela reached on an infield single. Jenny McNulty was the only other Saint with a hit, a single in the sixth.
Freshman Amanda Filippazzo took the loss for the Saints, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) in five innings of work.
Butsch finished the game 2-for-3 with the home run, two RBI and two runs scored for the Great Danes.
In game two, UAlbany got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first behind Butsch's second home run of the day, a two run shot to left field. Andrianna Walraven's solo home run in the fourth and Connors' RBI double in the fifth pushed the lead to 5-0 for the Great Danes.
Siena added two in the bottom half of the fifth to cut into the UAlbany lead when Jessica Mushel scored on a wild pitch and McNulty drove in Alyssa Sceppaguercio with an infield single.
The Great Danes would put the game away with a six run sixth highlighted by Liz Noto's three run homer to center.
Powell allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings to pick up her second victory of the day and complete their four game season sweep over their hometown rivals.
Siena wraps up non-conference play at 3 p.m. on Thursday when they host Quinnipiac.
