Final Stats
Siena concluded a wild week against three New England state schools with an 11-10 win at Vermont Thursday. Freshman Dan Paolini homered twice and finished 3-for-5 to lead the way for the Saints.
Paolini homered in each of the first two innings to held Siena grab a quick 6-1 lead. The Catamounts answered with three runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 7-6 lead into the middle innings.
Bill Cardona's single tied the game in the fifth, but the Catamounts answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead back.
Gary DerHagopian gave Siena the lead in the sixth with a two-run home run. The seesaw affair continued when Justin Milo responded with a two-run blast in the seventh to put the Catamounts up 10-9. For the second straight game, the Saints scored twice in the ninth to pull out the win.
Nick Messinger singled to start the rally and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a flyout. Anthony Giansanti then walked and both players scored on a double steal attempt. Vermont reliever Lief Sorenson cut off the throw to second and tried to pick Messinger off third, but misfired allowing both runners to score.
Dan Lazzaroni pitched the ninth, allowing only a one-out double, to pick up the save. Dan Pendleton earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief.
Cardona joined Paolini with three hits for the Saints and Kevin Quaranto had two hits. Anthony Giansanti launched his 12th home run of the season, as the Saints went deep four times.
Siena looks to ride the momentum of a strong week of non-league play into this weekend's series with Canisius. The Saints host the Griffs Saturday and Sunday at noon.
