Softball Drops Two in Non-Conference Play

April 30, 2009

Final Stats

Heather Schwartzburg allowed four hits and struck out 12 to lead the Bobcats to a 5-0 game one victory in Thursday afternoon's doubleheader at Siena Field. In the nightcap, eight different Bobcats had a hit to defeat the Saints 11-5 and complete the sweep.

In the opener, Quinnipiac (18-28) got on the board first with two runs in the third behind two-out RBI singles from Angela Casella and Kelly Wall to take the early lead. The Bobcats would add another run in the sixth and put the game away with two in the seventh on Casella's two RBI double to push the lead to 5-0.

The Saints (11-30) had their chance in the sixth after Schwartzburg was pulled with one out and a runner on second. Siena loaded the bases with two outs off reliever Jamie Iaquinto but Schwartzburg re-entered and struck out Courtney Mahan to get out of the jam and keep the Saints off the board.

Schwartzburg finished the game with 12 strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win for the Bobcats. Casella went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Quinnipiac.

Freshman Amanda Filippazzo took the loss for the Saints, allowing five runs (three earned) while striking out five in the complete game effort. Filippazzo now has 98 strikeouts on the season and is just two short of becoming only the third Saints' player to strike out 100 in a single season.

In game two, Siena got on the board first on Jamie Piela's RBI single on the bottom of the first. The Bobcats came back strong in the second, putting up three runs to take the lead behind Casella's two RBI double.

The Saints came back in the bottom half of the second to tie it up on RBI singles from Sara Gallacchi and Courtney Brinkman.

In the fourth, Quinnipiac scored four runs with two outs to take the lead back on a two RBI single from Kelly Wall and a two-run home run from Emily Bellush to take a 7-3 lead. The Bobcats would add another run in the sixth to push their lead to five.

The Saints cut into the lead in the bottom half of the sixth behind Brinkman's two RBI single but Quinnipiac put the game out of reach with three more in the seventh and take an 11-5 lead.

Brinkman finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI as Piela took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) while striking out three in four innings.

Iaquinto tossed a complete game, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out five to pick up the win. Bellush finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as Casella went 2-for-3 with four RBI and finished the day 5-for-7 with two doubles and seven RBI.

The Saints will wrap up regular season play when they host Canisius in MAAC action Saturday at 12 p.m. Siena seniors Renee Clavette, Jenny McNulty and Jamie Piela will be honored before the game.
