Siena Runs Away With Split

April 5, 2009

Game One

Game Two

Freshman Jen Duell scored the game-winning run on Rachael Matreale's wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader at Siena Field. In game one, Rider held off a late Siena rally to win 8-7 on the strength of two Candice Harris home runs.

In the front end Rider (9-22, 3-5) got on the board first scoring two runs on three Saints errors in the top of the first and Candice Harris hit her first of two home runs in the second to push the lead to four. The Broncs went on to score a run in each of the next four innings and were up 8-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Siena (5-14, 1-1) started the comeback when Olivia Calcagnini hit a solo home run, her second of the season, over the fence in left center. After an error and a single freshman Amanda Filippazzo came to the plate and hit a three-run home run to center to cut the deficit to one.

The Saints had the tying run at third and the game-winning run at second with two outs but Lauren Brunner struck out Nastasha Powlowsky to end the game.

Filippazzo finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and Courtney Brinkman went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Siena.

Candice Harris led the Broncs in game one, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Kelsey Krisch (2-6) picked up the win for Rider and Brunner picked up the save in relief. Filippazzo (2-6) took the loss for the Saints.

In the nightcap, Siena got on the board first on back-to-back RBI singles from Olivia Calcagnini and Lauren Weingart to help the Saints to a 3-0 lead. They added two more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Rider fought back scoring three runs in the sixth on a two RBI double from Derrin Minunni and an RBI single from Megan Kozlowski to bring it within one. The Broncs came right back in the seventh to tie it up on Brittany Eckett's RBI double.

The Saints had the winning run at second with one out in the seventh but Brittany Eckett snagged Weingart's line drive and doubled up Calcagnini at second to end the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, Renee Clavette walked to load the bases and on the next pitch Duell scored on Matreale's wild pitch to pick up the first conference win for the Saints.

Courtney Brinkman (2-4) picked up the win for the Saints, going eight innings while striking out eight and walking just one and Matreale (6-8) took the complete game loss for the Broncs.

Calcagnini went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Weingart went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The two combined to go 8-for-14 with five runs scored and three RBI on the day.

Siena will return to action Tuesday when they host Holy Cross in a doubleheader at Siena Field starting at 3:00 p.m.
