LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - On a chilly, wintry day in the Capital Region the Siena offense warmed up its fans as seven different Saints recorded a point in a 4-0 rout of Manhattan. With the victory, the surging Saints improved to 5-2-1 in their past eight matches.
"It's certainly nice to get our first shutout of the season," commented head coach Gareth Elliott. "It was a good performance, we scored four goals, kept the shutout and were able to rest some players going into our match on Sunday."
Siena (6-6-1, 3-1) wasted no time putting the game out of reach early. Joey Tavernese, James Beeston and Anthony Tagliaferri each scored in an eight and a half minute span midway through the first half to give Siena a comfortable 3-0 lead. Siena completely dominated Manhattan (0-11, 0-5) in the opening stanza, out-shooting the Jaspers 18-4.
In the second half, Matt Turcio capped the scoring with his second goal of the year and the defense did its part as the Saints spun their first shutout of the season. Phil Chabot made two saves in goal for Siena to earn the shutout.
Mike Matera, Emery Welshman and Joshua Vlasich all added assists for the Saints in a match where everyone had a hand in the offensive attack.
Siena out-shot Manhattan 26-12 and took six corners to the Jaspers none. Manhattan keeper Christopher Lands was kept busy throughout, making six saves in defeat.
The Saints, which have won five in a row over the Jaspers and are 6-0-1 in their last seven matches overall against Manhattan, also won their sixth straight home game against their conference foe.
Siena, which entered the game ranking 20th nationally in scoring, has now scored four or more goals in a match four times this season. The Green and Gold have scored 24 goals (3.4 goals/gm) in their six wins and one tie this season.
The Saints face a key showdown Sunday as they welcome Saint Peter's to Loudonville for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Peacocks entered the day Friday atop the MAAC standings with a 3-0-1 record.
