Siena out-hit Stetson 16-10, but the Hatters used a six-run fifth to pull out an 8-7 victory to even the first series of the season for both schools at 1-1. Anthony Giansanti and Mike Fish each had three hits for the Saints.
Siena jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a rally highlighted by Dan Paolini's two-run home run in the top of the third. Giansanti doubled to start the frame and Fish followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to account for the first run of the game. After Fish stole second, Paolini homered to left and Siena was off and running.
Stetson scored once in the fourth and then six times in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead and chase freshman starter Justin Brantley who began his collegiate career with three shutout innings. The big blow in the Hatters' fifth was a three-run homer by leadoff man Spencer Theisen.
The Saints quickly answered with two runs in the sixth on Andrew Sawyer's two-RBI single which cut the Stetson lead in half. After the Hatters put their final run on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Siena struck for single runs in the seventh and eighth to pull within the final margin.
Siena had runners on the corners with one out after cutting the deficit to a single run in the eighth, but clean-up man Kevin Quaranto, who had doubled and scored in the seventh, struck out and Gary DerHagopian grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Junior Jacob DeGrom got the two big outs for Stetson and then struck out the side in the ninth to preserve his team's first win of the season
Kyle Hudson, Sawyer and Paolini joined Giansanti and Fish with multihit games for the Saints who are batting .365 as a team through two games.
Stetson and Siena will take the field tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. in the third game of the four-game series.
