Morgan Childers struck out 15 batters to lead USC Upstate to a 3-0 victory over Siena in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at Cyrill Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader was called due to heavy rain in the middle of the fourth inning with the game tied at 2-2.
Upstate improved to 6-3 on the year. Siena opened its season today and fell to 0-1. The Saints travel to take on Georgia State Thursday.
Childers was dominant, striking out 15 batters, surrendering just three hits and walking none to improve to 5-1 on the year. She has reached double figures in strikeouts in all six starts on the year and has 70 on the season. She gave up a hit in each of the second, third and fourth innings, but didn't allow a base runner in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings to close out the game.
Upstate broke a scoreless tie with a run in the second when Lauren Quevedo reached on a fielder's choice and pinch runner Becca Williams beat the throw home. The Spartans made it a 3-0 game with a pair of runs in the second. Kim Brasil tripled to dive in pinch runner Katelyn Molkenthin and scored on Crislyn Chewning's RBI single.
The three runs would be all that Childers would need. She struck out the side in the fifth, retired the first two batters by way of the K in the sixth, and struck out the side in the seventh to end the game. Siena's Amanda Filippazzo tossed three innings to take the loss and fall to 0-1 on the year. Courtney Brinkman pitched three perfect innings of relief.
