Final Stats
Anthony Giansanti homered three times and drove in nine runs to pace a relentless Siena offense that pounded out 34 runs in a doubleheader sweep of New York Tech Saturday on Long Island. The Saints won the opener 21-14 and the second game 13-4.
Giansanti homered twice and drove in seven runs in the first game and Siena (7-11) set the tone with nine runs in its first at bat. The senior third baseman also led all players with four hits and four runs scored in the opener.
Dan Paolini had three hits, three runs scored and four RBI and catcher Larry Balkwill had three hits and two RBI. Like Giansanti, Paolini homered in both games raising his team-leading total to seven.
The Bears and Saints traded four run innings before Siena struck for two more runs to push the lead to 15-4. After Siena tacked on a run in the fifth, NYIT stormed back in the game with 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Leading 16-14, the Saints put the game away with five runs in the sixth.
NYIT actually out-hit the Saints 19-16 in the seven inning slugfest.
The teams played a nine-inning nightcap and Siena again led from start to finish after a huge first inning. This time, the Saints struck for six runs in their first at bat, and after scoring twice in the second and once in the third, they led 9-2.
Freshman Justin Brantley started and only allowed four runs in seven innings, scattering 13 hits to pick up his second victory of the season. He had more than enough support from the red-hot Siena offense which featured four players with multi-hit games despite being out-hit 13-11.
Paolini, Balkwill, William Cardona and Kevin Quaranto each had two hits in the second game. Giansanti and Paolini homered for the second straight game and Quaranto also went deep.
The two teams complete their three game set Sunday.
