Final Stats
Freshman outfielder Mike Fish singled home Andrew Sawyer to plate the game-winning run in the top of the 12th inning as Siena topped Radford 9-6 this afternoon in Radford, Va. Kevin Quaranto followed with a two-run single to seal the deal for the Saints as they avoided the sweep.
Siena (9-13) got off to a fast start, mounting a 6-0 lead in the third inning. After scoring single runs in both the first and second, the Saints erupted for four runs in the third. Gary DerHagopian, Kyle Baldani and Mike Allen strung together consecutive RBI singles, while Baldani came around to score the final run of the inning on the Highlander's second error of the frame.
Radford (12-9) responded with a pair of runs in the third and three more in the fifth before tying the game at 6-6 in the eighth on a one-out, bases loaded walk by Raphael Turner off reliever Anthony Giansanti plated Brett Mollenhauer. However, Giansanti beared down and struck out the final two batters of the inning to keep the game tied and leave the bases loaded. Radford stranded 12 men on base for the game, while the Saints left 14.
With one out in the top of the 12th, Sawyer and Giansanti recorded back-to-back singles, setting up Fish. The freshman centerfielder singled to left plating Sawyer with the eventual game-winner. After Dan Paolini was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Quaranto singled to right to plate two more insurance runs.
Dan Miklas pitched the final two innings to pick up the win. Miklas pitched in all three games of the series and was outstanding, hurling a total of 3.2 scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Miklas was at the back end of a solid pitching effort from Siena's relievers. He combined with C.J. Sohl and Giansanti to no-hit the Highlanders for the final 6.1 innings of the game.
Siena erupted for a season-high 21 hits led by four from Paolini and three apiece from Fish, DerHagopian, Baldani and Sawyer.
The Saints return home to open a six-game homestand Tuesday against Army. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
