Saints Reeling, Drop Two at Binghamton

March 31, 2010

Final Stats

Binghamton swept a home softball doubleheader with Siena wednesday, 7-6 and 2-1. The Bearcats have now won 11 of their last 13 games while Siena has lost 14 of its last 15.

In the back-and-forth opener Siena posting three runs in the top of the first inning as Courtney Mahan, Nastasha Powlowski and Kayla Kaminsky each collected RBI. It could have been more, but BU starter freshman Rhoda Marsteller was able to record a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the frame.

Stephanie DeLuca and Kelly Schuldt each recorded RBI in the bottom of the second for the Bearcats to cut back into Siena's lead, with the first coming on a bases-loaded walk and the second on a groundout.

Shannon Jones continued her promising rookie campaign with a two-run homer in the second to push the lead to 5-2. But the Bearcats responded with a four-run second, highlighted by a three-run homer by junior Deannie Plemon, her sixth of the year. With the blast, BU grabbed its first lead of the game 6-5.

Marsteller then settled in, retiring 14 of the next 15 batters. But the only batter she didn't retire was Lauren Weingart, who hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

With the game knotted up in the bottom of the sixth, two BU runners reached base aided by Siena errors, and then a groundout put the go-ahead run on third base. Senior Shannon McLeese would eventually score on a wild pitch with sophomore Briana Andrews at the plate with two outs for the game-winner.

Freshman Kate Price was then called out of the bullpen to close out the game as BU clung to a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh. The tying runner, Amanda Ferro, reached base on an error and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Price forced the next two batters to ground out to close out the game.

Ferro went 2-for-4 and scored two runs in a losing effort for the Saints. Price was given the ball to start the second game fro Binghamton and Courtney Brinkman went the distance in the circle for Siena.

The Saints again got off to a quick start as Weingart doubled home a run in the first. She finished the nightcap with two hits.

Price was lifted after three innings for sophomore Kristen Emerling, who pitched the next four innings, allowing no runs, two hits, one walk and striking out three. With the game still tied in the bottom of the fifth, Valencia singled to start off the inning and again was plated by DeLuca for the go-ahead run and the eventual game-winner.

Emerling ran into some trouble in the top of the seventh with the tying run reaching third base, but was able to garner the final out on a weak popup to third base. Siena will look to get back on track Friday when it travels to Connecticut to face Quinnipiac.
