Softball Rallies for Split at Holy Cross

April 13, 2010

Final Stats

Holy Cross posted an impressive 10-3 win in the opener, but the Siena softball team dug in and fought back for a gritty 2-1 win in the nightcap to earn a non-conference doubleheader split Tuesday afternoon in Worcester. Courtney Brinkman went all seven innings in the nightcap allowing just two hits and one earned run to pick up the victory.

Game 1: Holy Cross 10, Siena 3

Siena took a quick 1-0 lead on Shannon Jones' RBI double in the first but the Crusaders scored three times in the second and six times in the fourth to break the game open. Jones had two hits and two RBI and Lauren Weingart finished with three hits and an RBI to lead Siena.

Camile Trainor led the Crusaders' charge with three hits and two runs scored. Six other players hit safely for Holy Cross. The six-run fifth included five hits and no Siena errors.

Siena scored twice in the fifth to avoid the eight-run rule. Jones singled home the first tally and Weingart doubled her home. Kristyn Vaughn also had two hits for Siena which was only out-hit 9-8.

Amanda Filippazzo suffered the loss, dropping to 2-17 on the year. Caitlin Belanger went the distance to pick up her fifth win for Holy Cross.

Game 2: Siena 2, Holy Cross 1

Siena scored twice in the first and Holy Cross answered with a run in its half of the inning. Both pitchers matched zeroes the rest of the way.

Sara Gallacchi singled, and Jones followed with a one-out walk to start Siena's first inning rally. Both players came around to score on shortstop Tiffany Medwid's two-run error. Holy Cross' run came on Sam Fregenti's two-out RBI single.

The pitchers then took over. Brinkman did not allow a hit over the final six innings, in one of the most impressive efforts of her career. She also did not walk a batter, and struck out five. Three Holy Cross pitchers matched shutout innings over the Saints' final six at bats.

Lindsey McKeever and Gallacchi were the only two players to post multi-hit games in the well played nightcap.

It's a quick turn for the Saints. They open their home season (after 33 straight games away from home) when they host Colgate tomorrow at 3 p.m.
