Softball Sweeps Colgate in Home Opener

April 14, 2010

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Amanda Filippazzo and Courtney Brinkman each allowed just one run on three hits in complete game victories and the Siena offense came up with some timely hits as the Saints swept their long awaited home opener today at Siena field. The Saints topped Colgate by scores of 6-1 and 8-1 and have now won three in a row for the first time this year.

In the opener, the Saints (7-26) scored twice in the first and never trailed. Freshman phenom Shannon Jones provided the spark with a run-scoring single that eventually plated both runs following a fielding error by Colgate (20-12) centerfielder Alysa Dyson.

Siena maintained a 2-0 lead all the way until the sixth when the Raiders' Stephanie Hartquist tagged an RBI single to cut the Saints' lead in half. But it would be the only mistake made by Filippazzo who twirled a gem, allowing just three hits and a run while striking out four and walking none for the complete game victory.

Just to be sure though, the Saints piled on four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. The decisive blow came on a two-run single by pinch-hitter Kirstyn Vaughn.

The nightcap turned out to be almost a mirror image of the first game. Not only did Brinkman record nearly an identical line to that of Filippazzo's, but the Saints also put the game away early and never trailed.

For a second straight game, Jones came up to bat in the first with two on and nobody out and once again came through with the clutch hit. This time it was a three-run home run to center field, the freshman's fourth of the season.

The Saints added five insurance runs in the fifth to seal the deal as the team has begun to show signs of turning the corner. Siena has now outscored its opponents 16-3 over this three-game win streak.

Siena looks to continue its momentum and more importantly get in the win column in conference play when it returns to action Saturday for doubleheader action at Iona. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m. from New Rochelle, N.Y.
