Canisius Rallies Late Twice to Sweep Siena Nine

April 17, 2010

Final Stats Game 1
Final Stats Game 2

Canisius scored seven times in the seventh inning of the opener to turn a 3-2 deficit into a commanding lead on its way to a 10-3 win, and the Griffs trailed 4-1 early before rallying for a 5-4 win in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Siena Saturday in snowy Buffalo.

Game 1: Canisius 10, Siena 3

Shayne Wilson's RBI single broke the ice in the second inning for Canisius and the teams traded runs in the fifth before an eventful seventh decided the outcome.

Trailing 2-1, the Saints got a two-run single from Anthony Giansanti in the top of the seventh to take a brief lead. Starter Zach Hartman cruised into the seventh having allowed just two runs, but a key error allowed the Griffs to break free.

After a one-out single and a hit batter, an innocent grounder to third turned the complexion of the game. Third baseman Mike Allen threw wide of second base, loading the bases instead of a potential inning-ending double play. The Canisius bats took full advantage, as Sean Jamison followed with a two-run single and Ian Choy doubled him home. The decisive blow was Brian Burton's three-run homer.

Anthony Giansanti and Mike Fish combined for five hits and three RBI at the top of the Saints' order in a losing effort.

Game 2: Canisius 5, Siena 4

Perry Silverman's three-run home run in the fourth was the difference as the Griffs roared back from an early 4-1 deficit. It was one of the few mistakes starter Justin Brantley made, but it was costly.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the first when Choy doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Saints answered with three runs in the third. Gary DerHagopian singled to start the frame and Larry Balkwill walked. Kyle Hudson's sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in an errant throw that allowed DerHagopian to score and Balkwill to move to third. Andy Carucci followed with a sacrifice fly, and with two outs Giansanti singled home Siena's third run of the inning.

Giansanti had two hits in the second game to complete a five-hit day.

The Saints tacked on a run in the third. Dan Paolini began the inning with a single, stole second and scored on Kevin Quaranto's RBI single up the middle.

Canisius got the run back in the bottom of the third on Steve McQuail's second RBI of the game. Silverman's blast gave the Griffs the lead for good in the fourth.

The final three innings were played with a light snow in the air and in frigid temperatures. Neither team could mount much of a rally, though the Saints did leave two men on in the fifth and had the leadoff man reach in each of the final two innings.

Tomorrow's rubber match has been moved to a 1p.m. start due to inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday night and early Sunday.
