Softball Shutout Twice at Iona

April 17, 2010

Final Stats Game 1
Final Stats Game 2

Sarah Jackson pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts in the opener and Deanne Alego went the distance without allowing a run in the nightcap as Iona swept Siena 1-0 and 5-0 in MAAC softball action Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle.

Game 1: Iona 1, Siena 0

Siena (7-30/0-4) out-hit Iona (18-15/6-0) 6-3 but the Gaels made a first inning run hold up in a classic pitcher's duel.

Amanda Filippazzo pitched a complete game for the Saints, allowing just three hits and one run. The only run of the game scored in the first, when Marisa Newman drew a one out walk, Jodi Peterson followed with a double that put her on third and Eileen McCann's fielder's choice ground out scored pinch runner Tierney Markou with the decisive run.

Filippazzo had five strikeouts and walked three. Jackson had 11 strikeouts and no walks, but she did allow six different Saints to hit safely.

Game 2: Iona 5, Siena 0

The Gaels scored once in the second and four times in the third, more than enough insurance for Alego who went seven strong innings in recording the second shutout of the day.

Chelsea Sheehan's sacrifice fly in the second plated Melanie Gettins, who doubled, with the first run of the game. Iona broke the game open with four runs in the third on four hits. Three players had RBI singles in the frame and the fourth run scored on a fielding error that prolonged the inning.

Courtney Brinkman took the loss for the Saints pitching all six innings and allowing four earned runs.

The Saints play two more league games Sunday at Fairfield.
