Final Stats
The Siena softball team can't catch a break these days. The Saints' bus broke down on the way to Quinnipiac Saturday, forcing a nearly four-hour delay in the scheduled 1 p.m. doubleheader. To make matters worse, the Bobcats won the first game with a two-run walk-off home run in the seventh, 8-7, and took the second 3-0.
The Saints (3-22), losers of five straight and 16 of their last 17, came out swinging in game one. Courtney Mahan launched a three-run home run, her second of the week, to get things started right. Quinnipiac quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, but Siena bounced back with two in the third and one in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
Red-hot rookie Shannon Jones delivered the sixth run with a sharp double. She finished the day with three more hits to raise her team-leading average to .391.
The host Bobcats cut Siena's lead to 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Siena added an insurance tally in the seventh on Lauren Weingart's single. Quinnipiac would not be denied, however, as they struck for all three of their runs before Siena could manage an out in the bottom of the seventh.
Weingart, Jones and Mahan each had two hits in a losing effort.
The second game carried little of the same drama, but culminated in the same result. Quinnipac scored twice in the second and once in the fifth off Siena starter Amanda Filippazzo, who pitched well despite falling to 1-15 on the season.
Sophomore Heather Schwartzburg picked up the shutout victory striking out seven, while allowing four hits and no walks.
The Saints return to Connecticut twice more next week to face Central Connecticut Monday and Hartford Thursday.
