Final Stats
Siena pounded out 16 hits and rode the arm of sophomore Nicco Stento to a 13-2 win in the opener, but Cornell fought back to take the second game 7-2 as the Saints and Big Red split a non-league baseball doubleheader Tuesday in Ithaca.
Game 1: Siena (15-22) 13, Cornell (11-17) 2
Dan Paolini and Mike Fish had four hits apiece as the Saints bombed the Big Red from start to finish. Paolini drove in four runs, the final two coming on his 15th home run of the season which gave Siena a 13-0 lead in the top of the seventh.
Gary DerHagopian finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and Kevin Quaranto continued his sensational season with two hits and three RBI. The Saints' 2-5 hitters finished the game 13-19 with nine RBI and eight runs scored.
As awesome as Siena's offense was, Stento delivered the top effort of his career on the bump. The sophomore from Binghamton did not allow a run until Cornell's final at bat, when the Big Red struck for two unearned tallies. Stento's final line featured 6.1 innings of work, six hits and no earned runs.
The Saints scored in all but two innings and had four multi-run frames in their seven at bats. Eight of Siena's 16 hits went for extra bases, including short stop Andrew Sawyer's first home run of the season.
Game 2: Cornell 7, Siena 2
The Big Red got off to a quick start with three runs in the first and never trailed in taking the nightcap 7-2.
Freshman Ivan Lama got the first start of his career for Siena and struggled with his control. He walked the first batter he faced and hit the second, setting the stage for Mickey Brodsky's RBI double.
Brodsky was the hitting star for the Big Red, finishing game two 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Fish rounded out a six-hit day with two hits in the second game, including an RBI double in the third that keyed a rally which brought Siena within a run, 3-2.
Brian Billigan started and got the win, workinga four innings while allowing six hits and two runs, Rick Marks and David Rockford combined to pitch the final three innings for the Big Red without allowing a run.
Siena returns to MAAC play Saturday when it hosts Iona in a baseball doubleheader at noon.
