LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Kyle Sumple threw five innings of shutout ball in relief of game one and Robert Tedesco allowed just one run in a complete game gem in game two as the Siena baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from Iona Saturday afternoon. Siena won game one 5-1 and game two 8-1, completing the three-game series sweep of the Gaels.
Dan Paolini hit a record-setting home run in the first inning of game two. It was his 16th of the season and breaks the school's single season record set by Steve Borg in 1985.
Iona (6-29, 0-12) took its first and only lead of the series in the third inning of game one. Sumple entered for starting pitcher Justin Brantley with a man on second and no outs. Dean Dignelli hit an RBI single, but Sumple got out of the inning with a fly ball.
Sumple (1-4) settled in and allowed one hit the next four innings, earning his first win of the season.
The Saints (18-22, 6-6) scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth on Kevin Quaranto's double to right field.
Thomas Kriss (1-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings.
Siena hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of game two with a two-run shot by Paolini and a solo home run by Quaranto.
Tedesco (4-3) was lights out on the mound. He brought a shutout into the eighth inning when Iona finally got to him. They hit three singles, but only plated one run. Nick Rosetti drove one into left center, scoring Michael Chiaravalloti, but he tried stretching it to a double. Paolini caught the relay throw and as he ran Rosetti back to first, wheeled and threw home to get Matthew Kriss for the final out of the inning.
Siena's two-three-four hitters clobbered Iona pitching in game two. Mike Fish, Paolini and Quaranto combined for 6-of-14 from the plate, scored six runs and drove in six.
Justin Wiley (2-4) took the loss in game two. He allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings. He struck out seven and walked two.
Larry Balkwill caught game two and threw out three-of-four base stealers at second base.
The Saints return to action on Tuesday when they play at UMass.
