LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Kylie Apostolina drove in three runs and scored three more times in Game One and Leah McIntosh pitched a complete game one-hit shutout in the nightcap as UAlbany swept Siena softball by scores of 8-1 and 5-0 at Siena Field. With the defeats, the Saints fall to 0-6 this year against their crosstown rivals.
In the opener, UAlbany (18-20) broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third and led throughout. Siena's defense struggled throughout the frame, committing three key errors which led to all of the runs being unearned.
Siena (9-34) responded with a run in the bottom of the third on a Mandy Ferro RBI groundout which chased home Nastasha Powlowsky. Powlowsky went 2-for-2 in the game and hit her second double of the season.
But the Great Danes added two more in the fourth and two in the sixth to cruise to victory. Apostolina finished a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI double and her first home run of the year, a two-run shot.
In the nightcap, UAlbany's Leah McIntosh was nearly perfect. She retired the first 18 batters that she faced, carrying a perfect game into the seventh and final inning. But Ferro blooped a leadoff single just inside the right field line to break up the perfect game and no-hitter. McIntosh walked a batter later in the inning, but finished with the complete game victory and struck out 12.
Michelle Connors slugged a two-run home run in the first and finished with two hits and two runs scored to pace the UAlbany offense. Siena pitcher Courtney Brinkman pitched well in relief, allowing just three hits and one run in four innings of work out of the bullpen.
The Saints return to action for a conference doubleheader Saturday against Marist. Game times are 12 and 2 p.m. at Siena Field.
