The Siena softball team split a doubleheader at Central Connecticut Monday losing the first game 8-6 before stopping a six game losing streak with a 9-2 win in the second game. Amanda Filippazzo went the distance in the second game allowing just three hits and two runs to pick up her second win of the season.
In game one the Blue Devils (11-19) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Becca Mussatti led off the inning with a triple down the left field line and later scored on a RBI ground out to the second basemanby freshman Kelsey Barlow.
The Saints (4-23) answered back in the top of the second inning for a run with sophomore Lindsey McKeever's RBI single to centerfield scored sophomore Natasha Powlowsky who reached on a walk to start the inning.
The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs when sophomore Sarah Vlahos singled to start the inning. Vlahos was advanced to second base byfreshman Macy Stefanski'ssacrifice bunt. Junior Kendall Sours followed with singled to left center and would advance to second on the throw home. Vlahos and Sours would score to make the CCSU lead 3-1.
In the third inning the Blue Devils took a 6-1 lead thanks to two home runs. The first was a solo homer to left center field by junior Katherine Knowles. Barlow followed with a single to right center field and she scored on a tworun home run by senior Jaclyn Logan.
Siena then scored four straight runs to close within a single tally. Kayla Kaminsky drove home two runs in the fourth and Courtney Brinkman's double chased home two more in the fifth.
The Blue Devils took an 8-5 lead in the fifth inning when Vlahos and Stefanski each drove in a run. Siena's Kirstyn Vaughn hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it 8-6.
Central Connecticut finished game one with eight runs on 10 hits and two errors to defeat Siena with six runs on seven hits and one error.
Siena pounded out 15 hits and dominated the second game to post a 9-2 win. The Saints broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when freshman Shannon Jones' reached base on an error by the third baseman and McKeever who led off the inning with a walk came around to score.
In the fourth inning, McKeever singled home a run to highlight a two run rally and the Saints scored four times in the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Brinkman, Powlowsky, McKeever and Amanda Ferro all picked up RBIs in the frame.
Central would score they're only two runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning. The runs came on a pair of RBI singles by Knowles and Logan and would finish the game with two runs on three hits and two errors falling to the Saints who had nine runs on 15 hits and one error in the victory.
Sarah Gallacchi paced the Siena offense with three hits in game two. Ferro, Lauren Weingart, Brinkman and McKeever each added two hits.
Amanda Filippazzo was solid in the circle tossing seven innings while allowing just three hits and two runs.
