The Siena softball team entered its final weekend of play with an outside shot at reaching the four-team MAAC Championships. Those dreams were dashed Friday afternoon in Loudonville as Niagara convincingly swept a league doubleheader from the Saints 10-7 and 6-1.
Game 1: Niagara 10, Siena 7
The Purple Eagles (20-19, 9-5) pounded out 13 hits and scored multiple runs in every other inning to post a 10-7 victory. They scored the first run of the game on a double steal attempt in the top of the first, but Siena (12-37, 5-9) answered right back with two runs on Lauren Weingart's fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning.
Kayala Hines' two-run home run in the second put the Purple Eagles up 4-2, but Siena again answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring on an RBI single by Jessica Mushel and an RBI ground out by Mandy Ferro to tie the game at 4-4.
Niagara grabbed the lead for good in the fourth on Teresa Healy's two-run single through the left side of the infield. In the sixth, they took a 9-4 lead with a three-run rally highlighted by RBI singles from Kristin Sito and Kayla Hines.
Siena answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-7. Mushel singled home another run in the frame and pinch hitter Kayla Kaminski added an RBI hit. Niagara tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on Teresa Healy's sacrifice fly to account for the final margin.
Kristin Kill had three hits to lead the Purple Eagles offense. Healy, Sito and Hines each had two. Mushel went 3-for-2 with two RBI for the Saints.
Game 2: Niagara 6, Siena 1
Cassie Stone went the distance in the circle, scattering 10 hits and allowing just one unearned run to pick up the victory for Niagara.
The Purple Eagles scored once in the first, twice in the third, twice in the sixth adn once in the seventh. Siena score its run in the sixth on Nastasha Powlowski's RBI single.
Healey, the leading MAAC Player of the Year candidate, capped off another strong day at the plate with three hits in the nightcap. Hines finished 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Shannon Jones joined Kaminsky and Ferro with two hits for the Saints.
Siena plays its final games of the season Sunday when it celebrates Senior Day prior to its 1 p.m. doubleheader with Saint Peter's.
