Final Stats Game 2
Dan Paolini homered twice in the opener raising his school record total to 22, and Kyle Sumple pitched a complete game two hitter in the nightcap without allowing an earned run as Siena swept Saint Peter's 15-3 and 6-1 in Loudonville Saturday. The first game was delayed one hour and 45 minutes due to rain, and the entire doubleheader was played in unsettled weather.
Game 1: Siena 15, Saint Peter's 3
The Saints led 8-1 after three innings and never looked back in a 15-3 rout. Saint Peter's took a brief lead on Brian Schroeder's RBI single in the first, but Siena stormed back to score three times in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again all day.
Anthony Giansanti led off the bottom of the first with a triple, and he scored on Paolini's ensuing double. Paolini doubled in each of the first two innings before launching his first home run of the game well over the left field wall in the third. Kyle Baldini's two-run single in the first capped off the early rally.
Baldini was one of five Saints to post a multi-hit game. But no one did more damage than Paolini who finished 5-for-6 with four RBI and five runs scored.
Catcher Gary DerHagopian was a perfect 4-for-4 and Kevin Quaranto kept his average above .400 with a 2-for-3 opener that included three runs scored and two RBI. Larry Balkwill was the other Saint to manage two hits; he also drove in two runs.
The highlight of the game came in the fourth inning when Mike Fish, Paolini and Quaranto went back-to-back-to-back with long home runs.
Siena pounded out 19 hits and did not make an error. Freshman Robert Tedesco picked up the victory, working the final five innings without allowing a run. He struck out nine batters in his five innings of work and sacrificed just three hits.
Schroeder and Mike Pearson each had two hits to lead overmatched Saint Peter's.
Game 2: Siena 6, Saint Peter's 1
Sumple picked up the complete game win with a masterful performance in the nightcap. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out nine as the Saints finished off the doubleheader sweep with ease.
Giansanti finished 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBI and Baldini had two hits and two runs scored to lead the Saints.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Siena struck for four runs on four hits. Baldini began the rally with a sharp single to right. He scored on Giansanti's RBI double and Giansanti crossed home on Paolini's double down the left field line. Quaranto followed with an RBI single up the middle and Siena was off and running. Mike Allen scored the other run on a balk.
The Saints added an insurance tally in the fifth on Giansanti's second RBI double in as many innings.
The two teams complete the three game set with a nine-inning affair Sunday at noon.
