Final Stats
Reliever Anthony Giansanti left the tying run at third base by inducing a game-ending ground out that preserved Siena's 6-5 win over Saint Peter's Sunday in chilly Loudonville. The Saints even their MAAC record at 9-9 with the victory, keeping their long-shot playoff hopes alive.
Justin Brantley picked up the win for Siena, tossing six innings and allowing three runs. Only two of the tallies were earned and Brantley struck out five while walking three. He was relieved by Ryan Poplowski who pitched two-plus innings allowing two unearned runs while striking out two.
Siena scored an unearned run in the first inning to break the ice. Mike Fish, who reached with a one out single, scored on Gary DerHagopian's two-out grounder to third because when the Peacocks' first baseman dropped the ball.
Saint Peter's tied the game with a run in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on Tom Bouck's two-run double.
Trailing 3-1, the Saints quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Kevin Quaranto and Gary DerHagopian. Siena took the lead for good in the sixth on Anthony Giansanti's RBI safety. They then added two key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Kyle Baldini reached with a one-out double to left centerfield, and later scored on a passed ball. Giansanti then singled home Allen to put the Saints on top 6-3 entering the final frame.
The Peacocks rallied, scoring two unearned runs with two outs thanks to an error and two passed balls. But Giansanti buckled down after walking a batter to get the final out.
In addition to his fourth save, Giansanti finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. He has not allowed an earned run in nine relief appearances this season. Fish, Quaranto and Baldini also had two hits to pace Siena's 11-hit attack. Matt Mancini led Saint Peter's with two hits.
Siena has two MAAC series remaining this season and likely needs to win five of its final six games for a shot at the four-team MAAC Championships. They host Fairfield in a three-game set this Friday and Saturday, and travel to play Manhattan May 20-21.
