Game Two Box Score
Two days after beating UAlbany for the first time in over four years, Siena softball took the field at Marist hoping to start MAAC play with a bang. Instead, it began with a thud, as the Saints squandered early leads in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, dropping 3-2 and 7-6 decisions.
The Saints (10-15, 0-2) got on the board quickly in the opener, with Shannon Jones belting a two-run homer in the top of the first. However, the offense was held in check the rest of the game, managing just three hits over the final six innings, and the Red Foxes tied it with solo home runs in the third and fourth innings before completing the comeback with a run-scoring infield single in the sixth.
Siena looked to bounce back quickly in the nightcap, and got off to a smashing start. Alyssa Sceppaguercio drove in three runs with a first-inning double, and Jones drove in Lindsey McKeever with a second-inning sacrifice fly.
The Red Foxes, though, erupted in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on just three hits to take a 5-4 lead. Siena tied it at 5 with a Kayla Kaminsky RBI single in the third, and even retook the lead with a Jessika - Jo Sandrini solo shot in the fourth, but would lose in heartbreaking fashion.
Sandrini relieved starter Amanda Filippazzo, who pitched yet another great game after two-hitting Albany in Thursday's action, after the junior allowed a single and a sacrifice. The freshman then walked the first batter to put the go-ahead run on base, and both baserunners would score on a wild play after an error by Sceppaguercio resulted in the tying and winning runs being unearned.
The Saints will look to get back on track on Tuesday, when they travel to Hartford for a doubleheader.
