Siena's bats never came alive Tuesday, as the Saints dropped two games at home against crosstown rival UAlbany Tuesday in Loudonville. Siena fell 5-1 in the first and lost a fantastic pitcher's duel 2-0 in the nightcap.
Game one saw the Saints (16-23) fall behind 3-0 in the third, with Kathy Wambold's RBI single and Lauren Alcorn's two-RBI knock doing the damage. Siena got one back in the fourth, as a Nastasha Powlowsky groundout scored Alyssa Sceppaguercio from third.
However, Siena stranded runners on second and third, and would not get another serious offensive opportunity. The Great Danes scored two in the sixth off reliever Mandy Ferro, and coasted to victory after reaching base 16 times (eight hits, eight walks) in seven innings.
The second game of the doubleheader was a vicious pitcher's duel, as Amanda Filippazzo and UAlbany's Brittany MacFawn matched zeroes for six innings. Ultimately, though, the seventh inning was unkind to the Saints, as two infield hits, a fielder's choice, a walk, and a bloop single to left scored two runs for the Danes in that frame.
Siena looks to turn things around Saturday at Niagara in what's become one of the most important twinbills on the 2011 schedule. The Saints could make up valuable ground in the race for a spot in the MAAC Tournament with wins in western New York, while a sweep could prove devastating to the team's postseason hopes.
