Marist scored two runs in the top of the ninth, and held on through a 40-minute rain delay in the bottom half of the inning to snag a 4-3 victory from Siena on Senior Day in Loudonville. The outcome didn't impact much of anything, as Siena secured a postseason bid by sweeping the Red Foxes on Thursday.
Siena will be the No. 3 seed in next week's MAAC Championships, and face defending champ and No. 2 seed Rider in the First Round Thursday at either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. Top seed Manhattan and No. 4 seed Canisius will meet in the other First Round game in the double elimination Tournament.
Friday's action began with a Senior Day ceremony honoring the Saints senior class of Kevin Quaranto, Zach Hartman, Kyle Sumple and Kyle Hudson.
Hartman got the start Sunday, and pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two runs. He left trailing 2-0, but the Saints tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Dan Paolini walked to lead off the seventh and scored on Quaranto's double over the Michael Gallic's head in centerfield. The hit capped off a monster weekend for the senior, who went 6-9 (.667) with a key home run in game one, and five RBI to help extend his final season.
Jon Schwind, Ricky Pacione and Dan Zlotnick each had two hits for Marist which finishes the season 35-17 and 13-11 in the MAAC. Starting pitcher senior Sean McKeown pitched into the seventh allowing just two runs, and senior Kyle Putnam went the final 2.1 innings to earn the win.
Siena enters the MAAC Tournament red-hot having won 12 of its last 17 games, and six straight conference series to end the season. The Saints took two of three games from No. 2 seed Rider and No. 4 seed Canisius, and although they were swept by No. 1 seed Manhattan, that series took place back in late March on a bitter cold weekend here in Loudonville.
