Tavernese Inks Pro Deal With FC New York

June 23, 2011

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Former Siena Men's Soccer midfielder Joey Tavernese became the second Saint this year to ink a pro contract with FC New York, recently signing with the United Soccer League Club. Tavernese joins old teammate Steve Covino who signed with FC New York back in February.

Tavernese is just the second player in program history to sign a professional contract following Covino.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Joey and fully deserved," said head coach Gareth Elliott. "He has trained extremely hard ever since our fall season ended and it is great to see him get his reward. We look forward to following the progress of both Joe and Steve as they begin their professional careers."

A native of Garden City, N.Y., Tavernese started all 19 games for the Saints last fall and amassed 17 points. Tavernese tied for both the team and MAAC lead with nine assists which ranked 19th nationally. For his career, Tavernese played in 75 games making 58 starts and finished with 39 points on 11 goals and 17 assists.

FC New York is currently 3-5-4 on the season and returns to the pitch Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a home contest against the Richmond Kickers at Motamed Field on the campus of Adelphi University.
