Siena softball has now won three in a row. Led by the 1-2 punch of junior Shannon Jones and freshman Megan Volz, the Saints scored 14 runs in Wednesday's two-game sweep at Coppin State, defeating the Eagles 5-3 and 9-4 in Baltimore, Md.
Siena (5-6) never trailed in game one, but Coppin State hung around throughout. Siena forged ahead to stay in the fourth, when an RBI triple by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Volz gave the Saints a 3-1 lead.
The Green and Gold got insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Eagles threatened once more, putting the tying run on when down to their last out. However, pitcher Amanda Filippazzo snared a line drive to finish off the complete game, one where she allowed just two earned runs and four hits.
The second game saw offensive outbursts by both teams. The Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the third inning thanks to back-to-back-to-back doubles by Jones, Volz, and Abby Carpenter, but the Eagles soared back into the game with a four-run frame in their half of the third. Fortunately for Siena, their bats had more life, driving in three runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth.
Jones, Volz, and Carpenter combined for eight of Siena's 11 hits in the nightcap. Meanwhile, reigning MAAC Player of the Week Jessika - Jo Sandrini scored twice, drove in a run, and struck out ten in the circle in recording her second win of the season.
Siena returns to action Thursday with games against UMBC and Saint Francis (Pa.).
