Siena softball appeared well on its way to ending a five-game losing streak Thursday at crosstown rival UAlbany. However, the Saints dropped the first game in heart-wrenching fashion 7-5 before falling 10-2 in the nightcap, and have now dropped seven straight contests.

The day's first game got off to a great start for the Saints (6-13). Freshman Megan Volz manufactured a run in the first inning after singling, stealing second, advancing to third on a ball that got away from the catcher, and scoring on a wild pitch. Shannon Jones and Volz then hit back-to-back solo homers in the third (Volz's was the first of her collegiate career), and a two-run shot by junior Kayla Kaminsky later in the frame gave the Green and Gold a 5-3 lead.

However, the Great Danes would snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Siena pitcher Jessika - Jo Sandrini yielded a walk-off grand slam that gave UAlbany the win. Sandrini struck out seven and walked just two, but was ultimately saddled with her eighth loss of the season.

The heartbreak proved tough to overcome in the nightcap, as UAlbany exploded for five runs in the first inning. The Saints played their way back into the game in the fifth, when a double by freshman Emily Potere and several fielding miscues led to two runs, but the Great Danes sent Siena home early with five more runs in the sixth.

Siena will look to get off the schneid Saturday in New Jersey, when they travel to Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
