Baseball Sweeps Marist on Road

April 14, 2012

Box Score Game 1
Box Score Game 2

Ken Krishner singled home the tying and winning runs in the top of the seventh in game two, and the Siena pitching staff held Marist scoreless for 11 innings in the opener to pull off an improbable road sweep 1-0 (11) and 4-3 in Poughkeepsie Saturday.

Neil Fryer got the win in the opener with a stellar relief effort, and he came in to close the door in the nightcap to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Week Ryan Poplawski started for Siena and ran his scoreless inning streak past 15 innings with another dominant effort on the hill.

Vincent Citro provided the game's only offense with a key one-out single with the bases loaded in the seventh. The Saints could have done more damage, but the Red Foxes turned Ryan Metzler's liner into an inning-ending double play.

Siena trailed 3-1 entering the sixth in the second game, but Larry Balkwill's bases loaded sac fly to right made it a one-run game. Marist avoided further trouble when Brandon Dolan coaxed Mike Fish into an inning-ending foul pop up.

Dolan got the first two men out in the seventh, and seemed destined for the save when Vincent Citro worked out of a 1-2 count to walk. Kyle Baldani then pinch-hit and walked on four pitches, moving the tying run to second and forcing a Marist pitching change. That's when the fun started.

John Rooney walked to load the bases, and Krishner broke out of a season-long slump with Siena's biggest hit of the year to bring home Citro and pinch-runner Dan Sullivan.

The bottom of the seventh got very interesting when Jake Berry reached on a one-out infield single, and Zach Shank on a fielding error.

Marist's best hitter Mike Orefice stepped to the plate with a chance to tie or win the game, but Fryer got him to ground into a double play to end the game.

The two teams complete the three-game weekend series with a single nine inning game Sunday at noon.
