Baseball Falls 9-3 at William and Mary

Feb. 23, 2013

Final Stats

William and Mary broke a scoreless tie with a six-run fifth on its way to a 9-3 win over Siena Saturday night in Williamsburg, Va. Andres Ortiz and Larry Balkwill homered to account for Siena's three runs.

Siena starter Justin Brantley coasted through the first four innings allowing just one hit and striking out three, before the Tribe broke through with six runs on five hits in the decisive frame.

Brantley got Connor Henderson to ground back to the mound to start the fifth, but the next four men reached safely and Michael Shaw and Ryan Williams delivered crippling two-out, two-run singles.

Siena got half the runs back in its next at bat, all coming by virtue of the long ball. Ortiz homered to left with two outs, and after Mike Fish walked, Balkwill launched his second long ball of the season over the left field fence.

William and Mary starter Brett Koehler scattered eight hits in his 7.1 innings of work to secure the win. Mitchell Aker and John Sheehan closed the door in the eighth and ninth. The three Tribe pitchers combined to strike out nine Siena batters and walked none.

Siena reliever Ed Lewicki pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and three runs -just two unearned - while striking out five and walking three.

Ortiz and Fish each had multi-hit games for Siena. Kevin Nutter, Ryan Brown, Ryan Lidemuth and Ryan Hissey each had two hits for the Pride.

The two teams complete the three-game set bright and early Sunday. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
