Manhattan Edges Siena on Senior Day

May 17, 2013

Final Stats | Photo Gallery

Siena threw nine different pitchers on the final day of the regular-season and had their ninth inning rally come up just short in a 6-5 loss to Manhattan. The Saints dropped to the #4 seed in next week's MAAC Championships. Their first game will take place Thursday, May 23 at Trenton's Arm & Hammer Park.

Siena would have been the No. 2 or No. 3 seed had they won Friday, and they also missed out on an opportunity to win a season-series from Manhattan for the first time since 2002.

Siena out-hit Manhattan in all three games, and pounded out 12 hits in Friday's loss.

Senior Mike Fishwent 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his final game at Siena Field. Fish upped his batting average to .374. He leads the MAAC with 12 home runs, 80 hits, 49 RBI, 54 runs scored, 134 total bases and a .626 slugging percentage. Fish rides a 14-game hitting streak into the Championships and he's reached base in 28 straight contests.

Freshman Tyler Martis finished the season strong as well for Siena. Martis went 3-for-4 Friday, 14-for-22 (.636) the last two series, and finished the year third on the team with a .333 MAAC average. John Rooneyalso dominated the MAAC, batting a team-best .383 in league games after his 2-for-4 effort in the regular-season finale.

Brian Fay posted his fifth multi-hit game in the last six contests Friday, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Fay singled home Siena's final run with one out and two on in the ninth, but the Jaspers got Rooney to fly out to deep center before Kyle Murphy made a nice snag on Mike Allen'shot shot in the hole to end the game.

Manhattan pushed runs across against five of Siena's nine pitchers, including two runs in the seventh off regular MAAC starter Ed Lewicki and one in the eighth off ace Matt Gage.

Prior to the game, seniors Allen, Fish, Larry Balkwill, Kyle Baldani, Jake Werdesheim and Justin Brantleywere honored. Each appeared in Friday's game.

The Saints MAAC Tournament opponent and game time is still to be determined, as first place Rider travels to second place Marist this weekend. If Marist loses any of the three games, the Saints will play the Broncs Thursday at 7 p.m.
