Saints Sweeps Rebel Games Doubleheader

March 12, 2014

Box Score

The Siena softball team faced familiar foes on Tuesday for the third day of the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Fla. The Saints defeated Howard University for the second straight day by the score of 14-6 and won their rematch with Utah Valley 7-4 in the afternoon game to complete the doubleheader sweep and improve their record to 5-5.

In the first game, Paige Lloyd, Stephanie Viggiano and Jessika-Jo Sandrini led the Saints offensively. The trio each recorded two hits apiece against Howard's pitching and helped the Saints produce the team's most runs in a game this season. Lloyd's singles produced two RBIs.

Alyssa Lancaster, second in the nation in batting average, continued to hit the ball well on the day, earning a double and single in the two Tuesday games.

Antonia Edwards pitched a complete game to win her first game this year. Edwards gave up six runs, with three unearned in seven innings, striking out one and allowing three hits.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini took to the circle in the second game of the day, in their rematch with Utah Valley. Utah Valley defeated the Saints in the first day of the Rebel Spring Games 3-1. Sandrini tossed another complete game, her fourth of the season as the Saints defeated Utah Valley 7-4.

Sandrini (4-2) gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out seven for her fourth win of the year. Sandrini not only produced in the circle, she also reached base four times and scored three runs on one single, a walk and two hit-by-pitches.

Chelsey Drew drove home a run on a ground out to third in the first inning. After an Abby Carpenter double, Megan Volz drove her home on an RBI single to keep the Saints on top of Utah Valley.

Sandrini and the Saints defense would buckle down and allowed only one baserunner in the last ten batters of the game to secure their fifth win of the season and even their overall record at 5-5.

Softball now takes a day off before they are back at it again on Thursday, March 13 to play Creighton at 11 a.m. and Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
