Sandrini Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Win

The softball trip to Hartford was moved up a couple of hours due to the expected weather conditions. Siena started their first game at Hartford at 10 a.m. Jessika-Jo Sandrini tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Saints to an 8-0 win in five innings.

The Saints got on the board early with three runs in the first inning. Stephanie Viggiano led the game off with a ingle through the right side. Alyssa Lancaster came through with the big hit in the inning, smacking an RBI double to bring home Melanie Kalesse. Lancaster scored on Sandrini's single to center field. Chelsey Drew doubled home Sandrini to give the Saints the early 3-0 lead.

Sandrini shut the door on Hartford, starting in the first inning, striking out three of her 10 batters in the inning. Sandrini allowed three hits that were scattered throughout the game and she continued to keep batters off balance. Sandrini improves to 9-4 on the year.

Three Saints recorded multi-hit games in the opener. Led by Stephanie Viggiano with two singles to improve her season average to .379. Alyssa Lancaster had two hits and scored two runs. Lancaster belted two doubles, one coming in the first inning and again in the top of the fourth.

Abby Carpenter continues to have a hot bat after earning her second multi-hit game for the second consecutive game.

The Saints found themselves in a pitching duel for the second game of the doubleheader. Hartford defeated the Saints 1-0 as the Saints were unable to score on eight team hits.

Abby Carpenter followed up her multi-hit game in the first game with another in the second, for her third consecutive multi-hit game. Paige Lloyd carried a hot bat for the second game. Lloyd earned two hits, both singles coming late in the game in the fifth and the seventh.

Antonia Edwards started for the Saints, pitching a solid four innings, giving up the unearned run after an error on shortstop Melanie Kalesse in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Cacciola relieved Edwards to finish out the game. Cacciola pitched two innings, giving up three hits, no runs and one strikeout to keep the Saints within striking distance.

Softball had to postpone their MAAC home opening series with Manhattan due to poor field conditions and will resume their schedule on Wednesday, April 2 when they travel to two against UAlbany for a 3 p.m. start.
