Saints Sweeps Quinnipiac

April 12, 2014

Box Score

Loudonville, N.Y. - The weather finally has cooperated with the Siena softball team. After having to postpone their MAAC home opener, the Saints welcomed Quinnipiac to Loudonville for the team's home opener. Siena welcomed them in good fashion, sweeping the Bobcats 3-2 in game one and 10-2 in game two to put the Saints overall record to 17-16.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Saints started to make their comeback. Back-to-back walks to Alyssa Lancaster and Jessika - Jo Sandrini set up the big inning. Chelsey Drew drove home Bridgett Connors on a fielder's choice and Sandrini and Powlowsky came home on Megan Volz's fielder's choice to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.

Sandrini closed the door on the Bobcats as she improved her overall record to 13-6. Sandrini tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight Bobcats.

In the second game, the Saints offense came to life, scoring multiple runs in the fourth, five and sixth inning to win 10-2 in six innings and complete the sweep.

Entering the fourth inning tied at 1-1, Paige Lloyd stepped up to the plate with bases loaded. Lloyd drove a single up the middle to bring home Sandrini and Searight. Viggiano followed it up with a two RBI single as well, driving home Lloyd and Milligan.

Siena kept the pressure on the Bobcats in the fifth as Chelsey Drew connected for a two RBI home run, scoring Mikayla Powlowsky.

Three more runs in the sixth ended the game on the mercy rule when Jordan Sandrini hit a single through the middle of the infield, just out of the reach of the Bobcats' shortstop. Melanie Kalesse and Powlowsky scored the final runs.

The Saints are now 17-16, 5-1 and are above .500 for the first time in program history after playing 30 games since 1979 when the team was 16-14-2.

Softball continues on with the MAAC schedule on Wednesday, April 16 when they host Manhattan for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
