Five pitchers combined to allow just five hits, and all nine batters hit safely for Siena in a 4-0 shutout of Fordham late Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx. Rick Morales started and worked three shutout frames to earn his second straight victory.
The Saints (10-24) got off to a great start as they have so many times this season, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. Mike Allen doubled and scored on Justin Esquerra's sacrifice fly in the first, and after Morales worked out of trouble in the bottom of the frame, Dave Hoffmann singled home the Saints' second run in the second.
That's where things stayed until the ninth when Siena added two big insurance runs. Esquerra, Ortiz and Rooney began the rally with singles, and Brian Fay followed with an RBI groundout. Ortiz scored on a wild pitch, and Neil Fryer came on to close the door in the ninth, allowing just one hit.
Taylor Ahearn and Chris Amorosi each worked two scoreless innings for the Saints, and Justin Scala pitched a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts. Morales was credited with the win because Siena used a predetermined split rotation.
Fordham (13-21) used eight different pitchers, but the Rams had just one runner reach third base after the first inning.
The Saints return to action Friday when they welcome Iona to town for the first games played at Siena Field this season. The team has played 34 games and travelled over 11,000 miles without a home game. The three-game MAAC series begins with Friday's doubleheader at noon.
Siena is in first place in the MAAC, has won five of its last six, and is 10-7 since starting the year 0-17.
