Softball Sets Program Wins Record

April 24, 2014

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena softball set a new program record for wins in a single season after defeating Cornell 5-4 in the second game of the doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Siena Softball Field. The Saints improve to 23-18 on the year.

Softball tied their program record on Tuesday after sweeping Sacred Heart, tying the previous record of 22 wins by the 2005 Saints.

"It's nice for this team to mark their spots in the Siena College record books with the twenty-third win of the season," said Bill Lajeunesse. "I'm proud of them."

Siena (23-18) jumped out to a great start in game two, scoring a run in the first five innings and held on late for the 5-4 victory. Stephanie Viggiano recorded three hits including the game tying RBI double in the Siena fourth.

Freshman Bridget Connors recorded a double in her second straight game when she connected on a pitch in the fifth inning to drive in Mikayla Powlowsky for the game-winning run.

Danielle Cacciola (5-4) earned the win after relieving starter Antonia Edwards in the fourth inning. Cacciola went three innings, giving up one run on six hits, while striking out one batter. Alyssa Lancaster earned her first save of the season, recording the final two outs to preserve the 5-4 win.

It was the Big Red to get off to a fast start in game one of the doubleheader. Cornell (16-24) scored two runs on four hits off of Jessika-Jo Sandrini. Cornell scored again in the fourth when Sam Creamer homered to right field.

Abby Carpenter responded with her fourth home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning. Carpenter also homered in the second game for her team leading sixth home run.

Cornell's Alyson Onyon kept the Saints off balance for most of the game, allowing one run on six hits and seven strikeouts.

Up next for the Saints, is a tough road trip to face Iona (9-5 MAAC) on Saturday and a first place showdown with Fairfield (12-2 MAAC) on Sunday before finishing up the year with eight straight home games.
