Softball Improves to 3-1 in MAAC

Siena softball split the Sunday doubleheader with Monmouth this afternoon at Hackensack, N.J. held on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The game was moved because the field conditions at Monmouth were unplayable. Monmouth came from behind to win 4-2 in game one and the Saints won game two 7-2.

Siena got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Alyssa Lancaster singled to shortstop, bringing home Paige Lloyd for the 1-0 lead. Abby Carpenter followed it up with a leadoff solo home run in the fourth inning, giving Siena and Jessika-Jo Sandrini additional insurance runs.

With the Saints still leading 2-0, Monmouth soared in the fifth inning, earning four runs on three hits. Cardoza smacked a two run double and the very next batter, Reyes, cleared the bases with a two run homerun, fiving the Owls a 4-2 lead.

Siena was unable to score in the next two innings as Monmouth took game one and gave the Saints their first MAAC loss.

Sandrini faced 29 batters in six complete innings, giving up four runs (three earned), on eight hits while striking out seven.

Chelsea Stout, Mackenzie Cronin and Paige Lloyd each stole a base.

In the second game, Siena jumped out early and unlike in game one, the Saints refused to give up the lead and defeated Monmouth 7-2, improving their record to 14-15, 3-1.

Alyssa Lancaster (1-2, 2 RBI), Lauren Milligan (2-3, 2 RBI) and Melanie Kalesse (2-4) led the Saints offensively in game two. Siena scored all of their runs in two innings, the third and the sixth.

Milligan started the third with a leadoff single, followed by a single by Paige Lloyd and a fielder's choice by Mikayla Powlowsky for the quick 1-0 lead. Stephanie Viggiano doubled to left, driving home Paige Lloyd and ended with a two RBI single by Alyssa Lancaster. Siena scored four runs on four hits in the inning.

Melanie Kalesse started the sixth inning off with a bunt single to third base, stole second and later scored on Abby Carpenter's single down the left field line. Lauren Milligan added two more run after she doubled to left field, scoring Carpenter and Jordan Sandrini.

Danielle Cacciola started in the circle, going 3.1 innings, giving up one run on six hits. Jessika-Jo Sandrini relieved Cacciola in the fourth, finishing the remaining 3.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Sandrini picked up the win, improving her record to 12-6 on the year.

Softball (14-15, 3-1) and will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate for two games starting at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Siena is scheduled to have their home opener on Saturday, April 12 for two games against MAAC newcomer Quinnipiac. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
