April 9, 2014

Final Stats Game One
Final Stats Game Two

The Siena baseball team returned to the site of its first three wins this season and added two more with a mid-week non-conference sweep of NYIT in Old Westbury, N.Y. The Saints first MAAC home series against Niagara was moved to NYIT last month.

Game One

The Saints (7-23) struck for three runs in their first at bat, and that proved to be enough in a decisive 9-2 win over the Bears.

Freshman Taylor Ahearn earned the victory with five very strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four. Matt Quintana had his third straight effective relief outing, working the final two innings and allowing just one run.

Vincent Citro walked to start the game and stole second and third to set the stage for Siena's fast start. Andres Ortiz and Brian Fay each had RBI hits in the frame. Fay finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Every Siena started hit safely except for John Rooney who walked twice and scored two runs.

The Saints added a run in the second, two in the third and blew the game wide open with three runs in the fifth.

Nick Sebastian had two hits and a run scored for NYIT (1-24).

Game Two

Rick Morales worked five shutout innings and Neil Fryer finished the game with two shutout frames as the Saints scored early again and coasted to a 6-0 win.

Morales allowed just five hits and struck out two in his first win of the season. Fryer gave up just one hit over his two innings.

Citro got things started with a single to left, and after advancing to second when Mike Allen was hit by a pitch, the pair executed a double steal. Justin Esquerra got the first run home with a sacrifice fly, and Allen scored the second run of the game on a wild pitch.

The Saints added two runs in the fourth on another Esquerra sacrifice fly and yet another wild pitch scored Tyler Martis.

Siena scored twice in its final at bat in the seventh, the final run coming on Dave Hoffmann's RBI single. Citro finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Siena has a key MAAC series at Canisius this weekend. The two teams currently occupy the top two spots in the MAAC standings and they met for the MAAC Championship last season
