LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist Red Foxes left Loudonville Thursday evening with two MAAC wins after defeating the Saints 4-1 in game one and 6-5 in game two. The Saints came up just short in their comeback attempt in game two.
Siena jumped out early in game one after Stephanie Viggiano scored on an RBI single by Alyssa Lancaster. Lancaster hit a line drive just out of the reach of the Marist first baseman.
The third inning was a big inning for the Red Foxes. After a Alyssa Zahka single, the Red Foxes produced back-to-back doubles and scored three runs in the top of the innings. Taylor Kuzma's double drove home two runs.
Siena's offense couldn't provide a spark as they managed one hit after the third inning, a Paige Lloyd single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.
Siena's offense came to life in the second game, scoring five runs on eleven hits, but it was too little too late as their last inning comeback attempt fell short.
Siena got out early again on Marist, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. A two-out single by Paige Lloyd sent Alyssa Lancaster across the plate for the first run of the inning and was followed up immediately by Viggiano's RBI single to second.
Marist responded in the third with two more runs of their own. The big hit came from Alyssa Zahka's two RBI double to the left field wall. Siena would get out of the inning right before the skies opened up, raining hard enough for the umpire to call for the brief delay.
Marist took the lead in the fifth when Zahka homered over the left field wall, giving the Red Foxes the 4-2 lead.
Trailing 6-3 in the seventh, the Saints started to mouth a comeback. After two quick outs, Alyssa Lancaster started the rally with a hard single up the middle. The next batter, Chelsey Drew connected on a pitch and sent it over the left-center fence, putting the Saints down 6-5. Bridget Connors poked a pinch-hit single over the second baseman's glove to keep the inning alive, but the Saints rally fell short. Marist recorded the final out for the win.
Siena is home again on Saturday for a doubleheader against Saint Peter's. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
