Racing at the site of next month's MAAC Championships against the majority of the conference's competitors, the Siena Men's and Women's Cross Country programs got a good look at where they stand. The men finished third of seven MAAC schools at the meet, while the women came in sixth at the 20th Annual Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J.
Overall, the men finished third amongst the eight Division I squads in the five-mile race, trailing only conference foes Monmouth and Marist, while finishing ahead of Rider, Quinnipiac, Fairfield and Manhattan. The women came in seventh of the nine Division I teams and out-raced MAAC foe Manhattan on the 5K course. The Saints will return to Holmdel Park on Halloween morning for the MAAC Championships.
"Today's meet was an important step in the middle of our season to prepare us for the MAAC Championships and give us a really good opportunity to perform our best when that time comes around," said head coach John Kenworthy. "This weekend gave us some good insights on where we are and the work that we are going to have to do when it comes preparing for the championship race in October."
Junior Nick Miller paced the men's side, finishing 10th overall with a time of 26:58.2. Overall, the Saints placed four runners in the top-25 with sophomore Nick Cornine (16th - 27:11.3), junior Tom Higgins (17th - 27:13.6) and sophomore Paolo Fiore (24th - 27:26.7) all adding strong performances.
"We really for the first time today ran top to bottom as a pack," noted Kenworthy.
On the women's side, reigning MAAC Runner of the Week and junior captain Christie MacFarlane finished 16th overall in a time of 19:10.2. Sophomore Shannon Bauer (28th - 19:53.2) and freshman Dominica Bleichert (38th - 20:05.0) rounded out the Saints' leaders.
"After last weekend, the women had really grown a lot and had higher expectations, so it was nice to see where we stood now in the MAAC," added Kenworthy.
The Saints return to the course at Lehigh's Paul Short Run on Oct. 4 in Bethlehem, Pa.
