Feb. 20, 2015 Final Stats
Despite 3-4 days from both Stephanie Viggiano and Abby Carpenter and out-hitting the Lions 14-8, the Siena Softball team lost their season opener to Columbia 14-6. Lauren Butts was credited with the loss for the Saints in her collegiate debut.
The Saints drew first blood in the bottom of the first, when after stealing second base Viggiano was driven home on a Carpenter single. Columbia would do the majority of their damage in the third and fourth innings scoring five runs in each inning, led by Tonia Wu's three RBI's.
The Saints would answer in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on RBI's by Chelsea Stout, Viggiano and Melanie Kalesse, with Lauren Milligan scoring on a wild pitch. Columbia would add insurance to their lead with two runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Siena's lone remaining run would come in the bottom of the seventh when Alyssa Lancaster scored on a Carpenter double. Amanda Gatt drew the start for the Saints pitching 2.2 innings allowing five earned runs on three hits in a no decision. Butts drew the loss as the Lions took the lead in the third. Wu earned the victory for Columbia pitching 6.2 innings allowing two runs and nine hits.
Siena will look to rebound tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. when they play UMASS-Lowell in their second game of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational.
