Saints Win Series at Ohio

March 15, 2015

Final Stats

Brian Fay doubled twice and drove in three runs and Brett Connors was 2-for-4 with two RBI in Siena's 7-4 series-clinching win over Ohio Sunday at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillcicothe, Ohio.

The Saints (3-11) used eight different pitchers, and six had scoreless outings. Starter Taylor Ahearn was credited with the win, and Kyano Cummings finished the game with two scoreless frames to pick up the save.

Ohio (10-6) was 10-4 on the season after winning Saturday's season opener. The Bobcats swept three-game series with UNC Asheville, Longwood and Illinois-Chicago.

Siena was 1-11 at the same point after playing its typically arduous Southern schedule, but the defending MAAC champs showed they'll again be a force to reckon with in the MAAC the last 24 hours.

The Saints scored four times in the second inning to grab the lead for good. Connors broke the ice with a two-run single to left center that chased home Fred Smart and yesterday's hero Joe Drpich. Leadoff man Dan Swain doubled home two more runs later in the inning.

Ohio got right back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Finkler and Manny DeJesus each had run-scoring hits to highlight the rally.

The teams exchanged runs in the sixth, with Fay doubling home Siena's fifth tally, and Cody Gaertner, who finished 2-for-3, scoring Ohio's fourth run on a sacrifice fly.

Fay delivered the key hit in the eighth, a sharp double down the right field line that plated two key insurance runs and accounted for the final 7-4 margin.

Ahearn, Tyler Childrose, Chris Kearney, Ryan Bellomo, Chris Amorosi and Cummings all had scoreless appearances on the bump for Siena. Amorosi worked out of bases loaded jams in the sixth and seventh.

Justin Esquerra joined Fay and Connors with multi-hit games for Siena which won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Saints are scheduled to host Rider in their MAAC opening series this coming weekend. SienaSaints.com will have any schedule changes for that series.
