The Siena Softball team's bats were hot Saturday as they defeated Norfolk State 10-3 and 9-2 to sweep their series opening doubleheader against the Spartans. The Saints hit a season high four runs in the first game, matching their total from the season.
After a slow start offensively Siena's offense came alive in the middle innings, beginning with a four run third inning. A Paige Lloyd solo home run opened up inning, with Abby Carpenter and Sammy Smaldone doubles scoring the remaining three runs.
In the fourth, a three run home run by Carpenter highlighted the scoring for the inning, while a Smaldone home run scored the fourth run. Lloyd would homer again in the fifth, her third of the season to drive in the final two runs for the Saints.
Lauren Butts struck out seven over five innings to earn her first career collegiate victory.
In the second game Melanie Kalesse went 3-4 with three runs and Smaldone knocked in three runs to help the Saints earn the victory. A four run second would give the Saints all the runs they needed, with 2 RBI's by Smaldone and one from Carpenter.
Amanda Gatt earned her first victory as a Saint in the second game, pitching six innings, striking out six.
The Saints and Spartans close out their series tomorrow with one game at 11 a.m.
