The Siena Softball team opened MAAC play in style Sunday, defeating Saint Peter's 20-11 and 6-3. The 20 runs scored in the first game were the most runs scored by the team since 2004.
Everyone got in on the action in the first game with all nine Saints batters recording hits in the game including four by freshman Paige Hess. Siena opened up the game with three runs, scoring one on a Sammy Smaldone single and two on a Hess double.
The Saints would score five runs in the second and four in the third, but Saint Peter's would cut the lead to 12-11 heading into the fifth. Siena exploded for eight runs in the fifth, with RBIs by Stephanie Viggiano, Alyssa Lancaster, a two-run home run by Hess, and a grand slam by Abby Carpenter.
Lauren Butts earned her second win for the Saints pitching five innings striking out seven.
In the second game the Saints used three run second and fifth innings to help secure the victory. Lancaster lead the team with two RBIs, Smaldone lead the team with two hits in three at bats.
Amanda Gatt pitched a complete game for the Saints, striking out five in the victory.
Siena's 20 runs in the first game were their most since they defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) 22-0 on April 7th, 2004. The Saints are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Manhattan beginning at 11 a.m.
