Quinnipiac Rallies to Take Series From Siena

March 30, 2015

Final Stats Game 1
Final Stats Game 2

Quinnipiac won both games of Monday's doubleheader by the same 3-2 score, rallying to take the series from Siena after losing Friday's opener 8-3. The Saints got solid pitching, but couldn't come up with enough timely hits.

Game 1 - Quinnipiac 3, Siena 2 (9 innings)

Matthew Oestreicher singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

The contest was scheduled for seven innings, but Siena evened the score with two runs in the fifth to force extras.

Bryan Goossens pitched into the seventh for the Saints before giving way to Matt Quintana who ultimately suffered the loss. Robert Hitt picked up the victory for the Bobcats, tossing two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Tyler Martis singled home Siena's first run of the game in the fifth, and Dan Swain evened the score with an RBI groundout. Martis was stranded at third.

Joe Drpich doubled to lead off the seventh for the Saints, but pinch runner Dan Lowndes was gunned down at third on a failed sacrifice. That proved to be Siena's last big chance.

John Bodenhamer started the decisive rally with a one-out single in the ninth. Quintana then walked Dale Long, but struck out Brian Ruditys for the second out of the inning. Oestreicher singled to right, and pinch runner Matthew Payero came around to score the winning run, just beating the throw from Fred Smart.

Game 2 - Quinnipiac 3, Siena 2

Vincent Guglietti's two-run double in the fourth broke the ice and Siena missed some opportunities late in another 3-2 Bobcats' victory.

The Saints managed just three hits for the second straight game, spoiling strong pitching performances from starter Chris Amorosi and reliever Kyano Cummings. Cummings didn't allow a run in five innings of relief in the series.

Dave Hoffmann's line drive sac fly chased home Swain with Siena's first run in the sixth, and Fred Smart doubled and came around to score the second in the eighth. The Saints left Swain at third base after a line drive to center off the bat of Justin Esquerra and a ground out by Brian Fay.

Guglietti drove home all three runs for Quinnipiac.

Justin Thomas tossed seven innings and didn't allow an earned run to pick up the victory for the Bobcats. Gregory Egan got the save, striking out two of the three men he faced in the ninth.
