Siena Softball split their doubleheader with Sacred Heart yesterday, winning the first game 4-2, before falling 1-0 in game two. Head Coach Bill Lajeunesse earned his 100th career victory as Siena's head coach in the win.
On a day featuring strong pitching where runs were at a premium, the Saints (10-18-1) and Pioneers scored the entirety of runs in game one over the course of one inning. After Sacred Heart brought two home in the bottom of the fourth, Siena answered in the top of the fifth scoring five runs of their own.
Paige Lloyd's RBI double would score two of the Saints' runs, while Abby Carpenter would score Smaldone, and Lloyd would reach home on a error in the next at bat. Amanda Gatt carried the Saints the rest of the way, allowing only two hits over the final three innings to seal the victory. Gatt struck out seven and recorded her eighth complete game of the season.
In game two the Saints and Pioneers would manage only two hits each, as Sacred Heart scored the lone run on a Kelyn Fillmore RBI double in the third inning. Lauren Butts pitched a complete game striking out six in the loss.
Already the winningest coach in Siena Softball history, Lajeunesse has won at least 20 games in each of his previous four seasons as Siena's head coach. The Saints are back in action Saturday with a home MAAC doubleheader against Canisius beginning at 12 p.m.
