The Siena Softball team came up with an important sweep of Canisius in their doubleheader Saturday, winning 6-2 and 6-5, the latter coming on a walk-off RBI single by Alyssa Lancaster. The Golden Griffins came into the day with an 8-0 MAAC record.
Game on saw the Saints get a strong pitching performance from Amanda Gatt, and a balanced offensive effort. Gatt pitched her ninth complete game of the season, struck out four batters and allowed only five hits en route to the victory.
The Saints got hits from seven of their nine starters, including four who had multiple hits in the game. They struck first in the second inning on a Brooke Taylor RBI single. Stephanie Viggiano knocked home the Saints two runs in the fourth inning, and after Canisius got on the board with two in the sixth inning, Abby Carpenter and Paige Hess recorded RBI doubles on back-to-back at bats in the bottom of the inning.
Gatt closed the door on the Golden Griffins in the seventh to earn her sixth victory of the season.
In game two the Saints would again draw first blood on Paige Lloyd's eighth home run on the season. Canisius outscored Siena 3-2 in the fifth and sixth innings, and took a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
Lloyd opened up the bottom of the inning with a single to center. Carpenter would tie the game on the next at bat, hitting a bomb over the left field foul pole knotting the game at 5. Hess would then double to second and advance to third on a wild pitch. Stepping to the plate with no outs and the winning run on third, Lancaster hit a bloop single over the Alexis Roman's head to score Hess for the win.
With hits in both of today's game Lloyd extended her hitting streak to eight, and the Saints moved back over .500 in the MAAC. The Saints will be in Niagara tomorrow for a double header with the Purple Eagles beginning at 12 p.m.
