Siena Softball was the third Siena team this spring to have their home opener moved off campus. Following in the footsteps of Siena men's and women's lacrosse before them, the Saints played their home opener at RPI's Doris Robison field. Siena defeated the Hartford Hawks 9-2 and 8-6 to take both games in the doubleheader.
In the first game the Saints scored in four of their six innings, including a four run fourth inning. Paige Lloyd enjoyed a strong first game going 2-2 with two runs and two RBI's. Her solo home run in the third inning tied the game at 2-2.
The Saints would go on to score seven unanswered runs over the third, fourth and fifth with RBIs by Lloyd, Stephanie Viggiano and Sammy Smaldone. Lauren Butts pitched 5.2 innings for the Saints allowing only two runs and striking out four for the win.
In the second game, seven of the Saints nine starters recorded hits including a 3-4 outing by Abby Carpenter. The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind Carpenter, Brooke Taylor and Melanie Kalesse RBI's.
After the Hawks tied the game up in the top of the second the Saints scored five runs in the second, third and fourth innings to gain an 8-5 lead. Lloyd, Viggiano, Carpenter and Lancaster would record RBI's over the innings.
Amanda Gatt pitched her fourth complete game of the season and struck out Meghan Wynn with the bases loaded to end the game for the Saints.
Siena returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Marist at 12 and 2 pm.
